Aprendendo com música - Someone like you

Hi,

I guess everybody knows this song. Her voice is really splendid. On this video, Adele explains why she wrote the song. She also sings it beautifully.

A Phrasal Verb is a verb, plus a preposition or adverb, which creates a meaning that is different from the original verb.

Example:

Run = to move along, faster than walking, by taking quick steps in which each foot is lifted before the next foot touches the ground

But...

I ran into my teacher at the movies last night. run + into = meet
He ran away when he was 15. run + away = leave home

Let's go over the Phrasal Verbs in the song:

1) Settled down - to become familiar with a place and to feel happy and confident in it.
I heard that you're settled down.......

P.s: In the song this word is an adjective, but it can also be a phrasal verb.

2) Hold back - to not do something, often because of fear or because you do not want to make a bad situation worse.
It ain't like you to hold back......

P.s: This word "ain't" is used only in spoken English and it's a version of the verb to be. E.g.: It's not like you to hold back.....

3) Turn up = Come, arrive
I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited.....

4) Stay away - to not go near or become involved with someone; to avoid something that will have a bad effect on you.
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it.....

Phrasal verbs are very common in English and it can make a big difference for your understanding to know them. The best way to learn new words is when you can hear them in a context, so.... try to be in touch with the language as much as you can, by watching tv shows and movies or listening to songs.

Aprendendo com música - Can you feel the love tonight?

Hello,

Songs can help us improve our English a lot. Not to mention that they are a great pleasure for the soul.

Let's go over this beautiful song "Can you feel the love tonight?", which is the soundtrack for the Lion King.

There are many grammar aspects we could cover but let's talk about two adjectives:

1) Wide-eyed = too willing to believe and admire what you see or are told = innocent.
It's enough for this wide-eyed wanderer.....

Synonyms for it = dovelike, green, inexperienced, naive, pure, sinless, uncorrupted, undefiled, unwordly.

2) Star-crossed = unlucky, certain to fail, die, or be destroyed.
When the heart of this star-crossed voyager.....

Synonyms for it = doomed, catastrophic, cursed, disastrous, ill-fated, ill-omened, ill-starred, jinxed, luckless, misfortunate, unfortunate.

Of course nobody could possibly know all the existing words, but the more we know, the better we can speak, therefore, it's important to know synonyms.

The website http://thesaurus.com/ is a great source to find synonyms and antonyms. You should take a look at it ;-)

Enjoy the song!!!!!

Phrasal Verbs - Lesson 1

Dear students,

Phrasal verbs contain a main verb and a particle (a preposition or adverb) that together have their own meaning.

E.g:

Main verb = turn
Particle = on

Turn on = start (a machine)

Let's start....

The phrasal verbs I would like to share with you this week are:

1) to get in/to get on: to enter or to board a vehicle. To get in is used for cars; to get on is used for all other forms of transportation

2) to get out of/ to get off: to leave or to descend from a vehicle. To get out of is used for cars; to get off is used for all other forms of transportation.

3) To put on: to place on oneself (usually said of clothes) (S)*

4) To take off: to remove (usually said of clothes) (S)

5) To come up with: to find, to discover

* The symbol (S) indicates that the phrasal verb is separable.

E.g:

  • Mary put on her coat and left the room
  • Put your hat on before you leave the house

Valentine's day

Dear students and readers,

Today is Valentine's day in the USA. On this day not only couples exchange cards, messages and gifts; it's a day for friends too.

I would like to share with all of you the video below and a poem!

Happy Valentine's day!!!

A Friend Is Like A Valentine

A friend is like a Valentine,
Heartwarming, bringing pleasure,
Connected to good feelings,
With memories to treasure.

Seeing a special Valentine
Brings happiness to stay,
And that’s what you do, friend,
You brighten every day!
